ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
➪ DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TRAINING
It is open to players who need additional training to improve their first touch, ball control, receiving, passing, shooting and game understanding. Players have the option to train on Tuesdays and/or Sundays in Fall 2023.
If you are interested in getting to the next level in your soccer development and to improve your technical and tactical understanding, physical endurance and mental preparation for the game, the DC Youth Futbol Club is your best option to receive the best coaching possible.
For the first 30 minutes of practice, players train together. After this we typically group players by age and ability.
The program is designed for players really wanting to play, not distracting others and focused. We take training seriously and expend a considerable amount of time and energy on the program. The main ingredient and common theme among Development Players is their strong commitment and motivation to train and be serious.
➪ TRANSITION TO A SELECT TEAM
There is no guarantee that enrollment in the Development program will result in being chosen for a "select" team the following year or season. However, many DCYFC Development players have made the transition to a DCYFC "Select" team after training in our program.
➪ DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy is designed to maximize the number of touches on the ball in any given session.
The DCYFC Development program has a player/coach ratio of approximately 8:1 to maximize individual instruction and ensure constant playing time.
Players start out dribbling and do various exercises on how to dribble, what parts of the foot to use and learning how to accelerate, slow down, stop, turn and change directions. Several other dribbling games are played and then we get them to do 1v1 attacking and defending.
In addition to dribbling, we develop their ball control, passing, receiving, turning and shooting using proper technique. The last 20 minutes or so is devoted to small-side games or variations on this theme. The whole idea is to see if they can apply the techniques into scrimmages and games.
Parents ask if we play competitive matches during training. We play small-sided games of 3v3 and 4v4. Our focus is on technical and tactical development. There are exceptions when we have players who have a good grasp of moving to space and ability to control the ball. On Sundays, they play 5v5 matches.
If you believe your 6/7/8 year old son or daughter has the ability to play at a Select Team level we would certainly evaluate their skill level and make this determination.
➪ SEEKING TO IMPROVE
For those players seeking to elevate their game to the next level from recreation to a more serious commitment, the Development Program is an excellent option.
It is not a reasonable expectation for U9 - U12 recreation level players to be chosen for a "select" team with non-professional training. Because "Development" and "Select" team players have been training up to three seasons per year at two to three times per week with professional coaches, they are more advanced. However, this does not mean you cannot achieve these levels.
We believe our training philosophy and system will result in significant skill improvement.
